Reminder for General Retail Industry Award 2010 – Phase three penalty rates changes from 1 March 2020

As many employers may already know, over the past few years, penalty rates in the Restaurant, Hospitality, Pharmacy, Fast Food and Retail awards have been gradually changing.

This week encounter another phase of changes to the Retail Industry Award. Specifically with casual penalty rates.

We do not usually mention particular award changes for individual awards, but this is again another significant change to the Retail award where casual employment remains high in volume.

What are the changes?

Saturday work:

Casual employees who are not shift workers and work ordinary hours on a Saturday are paid the following percentages. These rates include casual loading.

Start Date Penalty Rate
1 March 2020 onwards 150%

Monday to Friday evening work after 6pm:

Casual employees who are not shift workers are paid the following percentages. These rates include casual loading.

Start Date Penalty Rate
1 March 2020 to 30 September 2020 140%

The next rate increase for this award will be on 1 March 2021.
