Warning on myGov phishing scams

Tax time is underway, and the ATO have announced that they are receiving an increase in reports of email scams that try to steal personal information.

Scammers pretending to be from the ‘myGov customer care team’ are sending emails that include screenshots of the myGovID app, asking people to verify their identity by clicking on a link.

The ‘secure form’ link goes to a fake myGov login page designed to steal personal information, including login and credit card details.

If someone gets an email or SMS like this, don’t click on any links and don’t provide the information requested.

Emails or SMS notifications from myGov will never include a login link. The ATO recommends to always access their online services directly via one of the following:

If they receive an SMS or email that looks like it’s from myGov, but it contains a link or appears suspicious, they can report it to ScamWatch.

If someone tells you they have clicked on a link or provided personal information, ask them to phone Services Australia’s Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk on 1800 941 126.
